O-A visa: complete health insurance requirements.
The Thai Non-Immigrant O-A Visa (Long Stay) is a retirement visa for foreign nationals aged 50 or older who wish to stay in Thailand without working. Health insurance is a mandatory part of the application. The key rule, effective from 1 October 2021, is that the applicant must hold medical insurance covering at least THB 3,000,000 (approximately USD 100,000) per policy year, including COVID-19 treatment, for the required period of stay in Thailand.
Minimum medical coverage per policy year
THB 3,000,000 — approximately USD 100,000.
Coverage must expressly include COVID-19 treatment.
The sum insured applies for each policy year.
Full required period of stay
The policy must cover the applicant for the required period of stay in Thailand.
For a standard one-year O-A stay, arrange insurance that covers the full required period.
Medical expenses
The policy must cover general medical treatment, including COVID-19 treatment.
The required total sum insured must be met.
Evidence of coverage
Provide the insurance policy documents to the Thai embassy or consulate handling your application.
Include any required insurance certificate with your application.

O-X · Official guidance checked on 15 October 2026
O-X visa: complete health insurance requirements.
Health insurance is mandatory for applicants for Thailand's Non-Immigrant O-X (10-year retirement) visa. This visa is for eligible foreign nationals aged 50 or older, with an initial stay of up to 5 years and the possibility of a further 5-year period. Use a qualifying Thai health insurance policy and confirm the requirements with the Royal Thai Embassy or consulate handling your application.
Inpatient (IPD) minimum
Not less than THB 400,000 per policy year.
Outpatient (OPD) minimum
Not less than THB 40,000 per policy year.
COVID-19 and general medical care
Must cover medical and treatment expenses, including COVID-19, for the duration of the stay.
Thai insurance company
The O-X policy must be issued by a Thai insurer participating in the applicable scheme.
Under the cited consular guidance, an international policy alone is not sufficient.
Continuous coverage
The policy must cover the required period of stay in Thailand.
Keep the policy active and renew it as required.
Official guidance: Royal Thai Embassy, Kuala Lumpur lists IPD THB 400,000 and OPD THB 40,000 per policy year; Royal Thai Consulate-General, Los Angeles and Royal Thai Embassy, Washington, D.C. publish updated regulations requiring THB 3,000,000, aligned with the O-A standard. Requirements vary by application location and can change; confirm with the embassy or consulate handling your application.
These 13 insurers take part in the health insurance scheme for O-A, O-X and LTR. Policies under the scheme run for up to one year; this is not a limit on how long your visa lasts. If you buy through this scheme, choose a qualifying policy from a participating insurer and check the current list before buying.

An insurer's inclusion does not mean every policy it sells qualifies. O-X requires qualifying Thai health insurance. First-year O-A applications may also use qualifying overseas insurance with the insurer-signed Foreign Insurance Certificate. LTR follows separate BOI criteria, which also allow qualifying international insurance. This is therefore not an exclusive insurer list for every visa.
